Begin your ASM journey here!

We hope that you will find our website useful in learning more about our school and that these admissions pages guide you through the application process. We are excited to help you as you complete your application.

Applications for the current year will be reviewed on a rolling basis if space is available in a requested grade. Students entering the Upper School during the school year will be assigned courses based on availability. Decisions are usually made within three weeks of an application being completed.

In the event of a grade level being full, ASM will maintain a wait pool.

Please review the steps below to get a sense of how our admissions process flows.

Admissions Standards

At the American School of Milan, we consider a wide range of factors that impact Admissions decisions. We seek families who are internationally minded and students who excel, not only in academics but also are well rounded and globally minded. Depending on the child’s age, students should be prepared to navigate an English academic environment. We are an inclusive environment and recognize that diversity is key to the global perspective that our families seek for their children. Ultimately, we seek families aligned with our values and mission and who choose non-profit organizations for their ‘ethos’ and their investment in Education.

Please do note that in some grades (currently in grades 8-11), we have a waitlist due to a large number of candidates. If your child is placed on a waitlist, you will be informed with an estimated date when we will be able to confirm your admission based on our grade capacity.

The following areas will be taken into consideration by the Admissions Committee when evaluating an application:

English Language Proficiency
Assessment Criteria
Entrance Testing
Age Requirements and Grade Placement
Students transferring from Southern Hemisphere Schools
Learning Needs
Early Childhood Entry Requirements

Complete Your Application Checklist

Upload all required documents in English or with official translations:

  • School report cards from the past 2 years (high school must include transcripts from grade 9).
  • Copy of the applicant’s passport or birth certificate.
  • Send the recommendations to a teacher and the principal or counselor who is familiar with the child. This can be done from your application checklist. Once you click on the recommendations, you will be redirected to a page where you can enter the email address of the teacher or principal.
  • Psycho-educational reports and ILPs/IEPs (if applicable).
  • Health form (completed by parent to note allergies/dietary restrictions).
  • Immunization record.
Entrance Exams (Grades 4-12)

After submitting your application, students will take an online MAP test in Math and English. Results of testing do not determine admission.

Interview (Grades 9-12)

Applicants will be interviewed by the Admissions Director. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like to meet in person or online. For inquiries, contact our Admissions Director, Dr. Denise Buren.

Step 2: Decision & Notification Process
What Happens Next

After we receive the completed application and all required documents, the Admissions Committee—made up of our educational team—will carefully review your child’s file. We’ll notify you by email once a decision is made.

If Your Child is Accepted:

You’ll need to confirm the acceptance and complete the enrollment contract, which will appear in your checklist, within five working days.

Please Note:

Applications for students with Learning Needs or other special circumstances may take longer to process, and enrollment is not confirmed until the following steps have been completed:

  1. Review with the Learning Needs team to assess whether we are able to support the need with the personnel/resources that we have.
  2. In some cases, and due to grade capacity, we will not be able to confirm placement until after our yearly re-enrollment, which takes place (March-April), and in order to predict the number of spaces that will be available for all students, as well as for those with learning needs.
  3. ASM maintains an average of around 10% of students with diagnosed learning needs in each grade, and we are not able to support a greater number of students as support teachers (personnel) are assigned by grade level.
  4. We recommend holding your child’s current school placement until you have received confirmation of a placement.
Step 3: Getting Your Child Ready for ASM
After Acceptance

Once you confirm, we’ll provide you with all the necessary information for your child’s first day at ASM. (Please ensure that we have your correct email address so that this information can be delivered to you).

Notice for Students in Grades 6-12:

If students are joining us mid-semester, their first day will be a half-day designated as an orientation day. During this time, students will receive their lunch cards, schedules, laptops, and other essential materials.
