The ES Classroom Assistant collaborates closely with the classroom teacher to coordinate and support all instructional efforts and the duty of care for the assigned students. Classroom assistants participate in all learning activities and transition students throughout the day, between classes and assist students to board the bus in the morning, and afternoon. Classroom assistants perform other duties and assume other responsibilities that may be reasonably assigned by the Principals, Business Manager, and or Director.

The contractual attendance dates are one week before the first day of school through one week after the last day of school.


Daily activities and responsibilities will include the following

  • Supervise students both inside and outside of the classroom, including all areas of the school (ie, cafeteria and playground). Supervise students on scheduled field trips
  • Prepare and organize daily lesson materials and teaching supplies under the direction and guidance of the teacher/principal
  • Present mini-lessons to students in small groups or large groups under the direction and guidance of the teacher
  • Assist children individually or in small groups in order to reinforce learning concepts
  • Ability to assume the lead role in the classroom when the classroom teacher is absent, if required
  • Provide assistance to students needing extra social, emotional, and behavioral support, including ELL support
  • Organize classroom instructional resources, technology, maintain bulletin board displays, and post students’ work as coordinated with the teacher
  • Report to the classroom teacher and/or principal any problem that may occur with students.
  • Enforce administration policies and rules governing students
  • Assist students and specialist teachers during specialist classes such as library, Art, PE, Music, Science, or Italian
  • As much as possible, stay abreast of the use of interactive boards and other technology that is helpful to manage day-to-day classroom needs (ie, PowerSchool for taking attendance if needed)
  • Participate in Parent-Teacher conferences when requested
  • Refer parents to the classroom teacher with any questions, concerns, or inquiries regarding specific child development/behavior or school activities
  • Duties for the start and end of the school year include, but are not limited to: organizing supplies, packing up materials, clearing cubbies, hallways, and classrooms, clerical duties such as photocopying, sorting and preparing information to be mailed home, preparing documents for the start of the next school year, removing bulletin boards, and cleaning supplies and materials for summer storage.  Duties may be requested in any part of the school and are not limited to the elementary school

 

Required Skills, Qualifications, and Experience 

  • High school diploma or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in teaching or a related field is favorable
  • Computer literacy (basic interface with technology)
  • English mother tongue preferred, B2 English proficiency required
  • Be able to exercise tact, discretion, and confidentiality  
  • Treat all children with dignity and respect while being a positive contributing member of the school community
  • Previous experience in the same role or other similar roles that allowed the development of the skills listed above is desirable
