Understanding Report Cards at ASM

At the American School of Milan (ASM), we are committed to fostering an environment where students develop as self-directed learners while achieving academic excellence. As we approach the mid-year point, parents will receive their child’s Semester 1 Report Card, which provides insights into their learning progress, skills development, and areas for growth.

How ASM’s Report Cards Support Learning

Our curriculum follows internationally recognized standards, including the Common Core Standards for math and literacy and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for science. These frameworks ensure that our students receive a rigorous and globally transferable education, preparing them for future success in any international school.

The Semester 1 Report Card evaluates student progress using four categories

Extending Exceeding expectations and applying learning independently.
Meets Expectations Demonstrating proficiency and independence.
Developing Progressing toward full proficiency with support.
Requires Support Needs additional guidance to meet learning objectives.

The Importance of Student Success Indicators

Beyond academic achievement, ASM emphasizes the development of essential skills known as Student Success Indicators. These indicators reflect a child’s growth as a:

How Families Can Support Learning at Home

Engaging in conversations with children about their learning journey encourages self-reflection and independence. Here are some discussion prompts to help guide meaningful conversations:

What is something you learned this year that you are proud of?
What was challenging for you, and how did you overcome it?
What goal would you like to set for Semester 2?
How can we support your learning at home?

Encouraging metacognition—thinking about learning—helps children develop self-awareness and take ownership of their educational journey. Families can have these conversations in their home language, which further supports linguistic development and comprehension.

As we move into the second semester, ASM remains dedicated to fostering a nurturing and intellectually stimulating environment for elementary students. By working together—teachers, students, and families—we can continue to build a foundation for lifelong learning.

For any questions or support regarding student learning, we at ASM are here to help.
