ASM Upper School Technology Guidelines

2 min read

ASM recognizes that digital tools can enhance learning but also easily distract from it; to help students build healthy, balanced tech habits, we set clear, consistent expectations. Personal mobile phones are not permitted to be used or seen anywhere on campus.

General Guidelines for Technology Usage

  1. Personal mobile phones may be brought to school but must remain completely out of sight from the time students enter the school gate until they leave it. Out of sight means powered off or on silent, stored in lockers or fully‑zipped backpacks, never in pockets, on desks, or in hands.
  2. Laptops: Students are expected to bring a charged laptop to every class.
  3. Technology may be used in class only with explicit teacher approval. Teachers may authorise school‑owned iPads/cameras for planned lessons. Personal phones will not be used in class.
  4. Library Tech Zone: Outside of class, laptops may only be used in the Library Tech Zone or the Silent Study Center, and only for educational purposes—teacher‑assigned work, passion projects, or independent study. Staff on duty have final authority and will close laptops if use does not meet our criteria (streaming shows, non‑educational videos, gaming, social media, etc.).
  5. Headphones are permitted in class when requested by the teacher or to study without distraction in the Library Tech Zone or the Silent Study Center. Headphones are not permitted in public areas.

Laptops for Learning  #

Students are expected to have a charged laptop and charger for class each day. School-related programs, software, and extensions should be prioritized. Unless in a designated tech space, students will not use laptops outside of class time. If students experience issues related to the functionality of their laptop, they should contact the helpdesk as soon as possible, ideally outside of class time.

Digital Responsibility  #

Students are responsible for their online conduct as outlined in the parent-student handbook. Any computer-based activity should model ASM’s values of Respect, Kindness, Courage, Integrity, and Curiosity, and follow ASM’s student code of conduct.
