Sparking Creativity During Computer Science Education Week

Code Week

The Elementary School at the American School of Milan recently celebrated Computer Science Education Week with a series of engaging and innovative activities during the global Hour of Code initiative. This annual event, held in December to honor Grace Hopper—one of the pioneering figures in computer science—offered our students an exciting opportunity to dive into the world of coding.

Learning Through Exploration

Throughout the week, students explored coding in various creative ways. During science classes, they worked with platforms like Code.org and Kodable, learning fundamental computational thinking skills. These hands-on sessions encouraged students to tackle challenges, solve problems, and express their creativity through technology.

Recess was transformed into a hub of unplugged coding activities, including:

Coding a Masterpiece Guided drawing activities that combined art and algorithms.
Coding Bracelets Crafting unique 5-bit binary bead patterns to spell out words.
Interactive Hour of Code Games Fun and engaging exercises that introduced programming concepts.

Collaboration Across Grades

A special highlight of the week was the support provided by Mr. Goss and his Upper School computer programming students. Their mentorship and enthusiasm inspired the younger students and made the coding journey even more enjoyable and impactful.

Building Skills for the Future

This week was more than just an introduction to coding—it was a celebration of creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. By embracing these activities, our students have taken their first steps into the fascinating world of technology, laying the foundation for future learning and exploration.

A heartfelt thank you to all the teachers, students, and volunteers who made this week so memorable. We are proud to see our young learners approach coding with such curiosity and enthusiasm!

Let’s continue to inspire our students to think big and create boldly as they navigate their educational journey.
