An international school’s hands-on science field trip to Genoa explores biodiversity, evolution, and sustainability through experiential learning.
Discovering the Wonders of the Ocean
Recently, ASM tenth graders embarked on an exciting hands-on learning experience at the Acquario di Genova, Europe’s largest aquarium. The visit was centered around two main themes: Biodiversity and Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, essential components of ASM’s international school curriculum.
During the guided tour, students encountered an incredible variety of marine life—dolphins, colorful tropical fish, and penguins darting through the water with astonishing speed. A highlight was the opportunity to respectfully touch live stingrays, offering students a unique, tactile connection to ocean life.
Learning About Evolution Through Exploration
For the group focused on Evolution, the trip transformed abstract scientific theories into tangible, real-world examples. Observing different species side-by-side allowed students to visualize key concepts like adaptation, natural selection, and common ancestry—building a deeper understanding of science education beyond textbooks.
It was inspiring to see how Darwin’s Theory continues to inform our view of the natural world.
Inside the Floating Rainforest: Exploring Biodiversity Firsthand
Next, students visited the Biosfera—a spectacular miniature rainforest home to over 150 plant and animal species.
Immersed in this vibrant tropical environment, they explored:

Each discovery highlighted the intricate biodiversity that sustains rainforest ecosystems, reinforcing lessons in environmental science and sustainability.
From Sea Life to Sea Stories: A Journey Through History
To further deepen their real-world learning, students headed to the Galata Museo del Mare, one of Europe’s foremost maritime museums.
They explored:
– Life-size ship replicas
– Ancient navigational instruments
– Stories of explorers and emigrants crossing the seas
The adventure continued inside an authentic submarine, where students navigated the control room and sleeping quarters. The visit connected marine biology with human maritime history with interactive exhibits and immersive sounds, bringing the curriculum to life through experiential learning.
Students appreciated the freedom to explore independently, which encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, and lively discussions among their peers.
Why Learning About Biodiversity Matters
At ASM, our commitment to a greener future is deeply rooted in sustainability and global citizenship. Through this trip, tenth graders witnessed firsthand how species interconnect to form delicate ecosystems.
They gained an invaluable understanding of how protecting biodiversity means protecting our planet’s future—a lesson that reflects ASM’s dedication to international education with real-world impact.
A Day of Discovery, Connection, and Inspiration
This unforgettable field trip demonstrated how real-world experiences amplify academic learning. By seeing marine life up close, navigating a rainforest, and exploring human migration history, ASM students strengthened their critical thinking, environmental empathy, and global awareness.
At ASM, field trips are more than fun excursions; they are intentional opportunities for students to grow as global learners, critical thinkers, and future leaders.
