Empowering young people to discover their purpose, build resilience, and make an impact.

At the American School of Milan, we proudly offer the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award — a globally recognized program that helps students develop essential life skills, independence, and confidence through non-formal education and real-world experiences.

About the Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a global framework designed to help young people explore their potential, find their purpose, and develop lifelong skills.

Open to all students aged 14 to 24, the Award is active in over 120 countries, and welcomes participants from all backgrounds, cultures, and abilities.

Founded in 1956, the Award recognizes the value of learning beyond the classroom — helping participants build character, resilience, and leadership as they take control of their own personal journey.

By joining the Award at ASM, students become part of a worldwide community of changemakers who are committed to self-discovery, service, and growth.

Why It Matters for ASM Students

At ASM, the Award aligns perfectly with our mission to prepare students for the challenges of an ever-changing world.

Through this programme, students:
Develop leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
Build self-confidence and independence through hands-on experience.
Engage in meaningful community service and global citizenship.
Strengthen their physical and mental well-being through outdoor challenges.
Gain an internationally recognized accreditation valued by universities and employers.

Empowering young people to discover their purpose, build resilience, and make an impact.

How the Program Works at ASM

The Award is divided into levels (Bronze and Silver) and sections that encourage personal development across multiple areas of life.

Each participant completes a balanced combination of:

  • Voluntary Service – Giving back to the community.
  • Physical Recreation – Promoting fitness and healthy living.
  • Skills – Developing practical and creative abilities.
  • Adventurous Journey – Planning and undertaking a group expedition.

At ASM, students typically begin the Bronze Award between Grades 9 and 11, guided by a dedicated Award Leader and supported by trained staff mentors. Participants set personal goals, document their progress, and reflect on their learning through a digital record book.
