International Stage at AMIS Festivals
This year, ASM’s music students have taken center stage at two prestigious international music festivals organized by the Association for Music in International Schools (AMIS). ASM’s talented jazz and choir students had the extraordinary opportunity to travel to Germany and the UK to represent our school and perform alongside young musicians from around the world. Here’s a look at their inspiring journey, filled with music, learning, and cultural exchange.
Jazz Excellence at the AMIS Honor Jazz Festival and Workshop
Eleven ASM students recently traveled to Düsseldorf, Germany, to participate in the AMIS Honor Jazz Festival and Workshop. This exciting event brought together musicians from AMIS member schools across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, all of whom auditioned last spring for a coveted spot in the honor vocal jazz ensemble and honor big band. ASM is incredibly proud to share that Alessandra D. and Elena M. were selected as two of only twelve vocalists chosen for the prestigious honor vocal jazz ensemble.
Jazz Workshops and Performances
The ASM students immersed themselves in three full days of jazz workshops, learning to master jazz standards and the fundamentals of improvisation. The students attended rehearsals with professional jazz educators and performers who guided them through complex pieces, offering an invaluable opportunity to enhance their jazz skills in a focused and collaborative setting.
On Saturday afternoon, the students had the chance to showcase their progress in a presentation performance, followed by an incredible gala concert later that evening. The gala featured both the Honor Vocal Jazz Ensemble and the Honor Big Band, filling the venue with electrifying music that reflected the dedication and hard work of these young musicians. For Alessandra and Elena, the concert was a proud culmination of their efforts as they stood alongside peers from around the world to deliver an unforgettable performance.
Beyond the Music: Cultural Experiences in Germany
In addition to their musical activities, ASM’s jazz students had the chance to experience the local culture of Düsseldorf. The group enjoyed sampling German cuisine and exploring the city’s vibrant atmosphere. One of the highlights of the trip was a bonding experience at a horror-themed Escape Room, which brought laughter, teamwork, and lasting memories. Students also enjoyed performances by a local jazz big band, providing inspiration and insight into the world of professional jazz.
Middle School Voices Shine at the AMIS Honor Treble Choir Festival
Just a few weeks before the jazz festival, six middle school students from ASM’s choir traveled to London to participate in the AMIS Middle School Honor Treble Choir Festival. This year’s festival held special significance as AMIS celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of promoting music education and international collaboration among young musicians.
A Diverse and Challenging Program
The ASM choir representatives joined other talented middle school singers in an intensive choral program conducted by James Libbey. Under his guidance, students performed a musically diverse program that spanned various cultures and styles. This demanding repertoire challenged students to push their boundaries, enhancing their vocal techniques and honing their performance skills. By collaborating with peers and learning new vocal techniques, students gained invaluable experience that will benefit them in future performances.
The music-making process was both rigorous and rewarding, as students engaged with complex pieces in exciting and inspirational ways. Through their participation in the Honor Treble Choir, students grew not only as choral singers but also as artists and performers, gaining confidence in their ability to tackle challenging music with poise and precision.
Congratulations to Our Choir Representatives
The six ASM students—Chloe R., Lorena C., Elsie B., Olivia B., Bianca C., and Carolina M.—dedicated themselves to learning the intricate details of the festival program and performed beautifully, representing ASM with pride. Their enthusiasm, commitment, and teamwork were evident in every note, and their outstanding performance left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance.
The Value of International Music Festivals: Learning and Growth Beyond the Classroom
Both the AMIS Jazz Festival and the Middle School Honor Treble Choir Festival provided ASM students with a unique opportunity to broaden their musical horizons and develop skills that go beyond the classroom. By participating in these international festivals, our students were able to engage with new styles, collaborate with talented peers, and learn from world-class conductors and educators.
Building Confidence and Technical Skills
For many students, performing in an international setting helped them build confidence in their abilities. Jazz students explored the improvisational nature of jazz, which allowed them to take creative risks and grow as musicians. Similarly, choir students experienced the challenge of singing intricate choral arrangements in harmony with other talented singers, which required dedication, focus, and coordination.
The workshops and rehearsals offered students a chance to deepen their technical skills, whether in vocal jazz improvisation, mastering complex rhythms, or refining vocal tone and pitch. These hands-on learning experiences pushed students to reach new levels of musical proficiency and provided them with tools they’ll carry forward in their musical journeys.
Fostering Cultural Awareness and Global Friendships
Participating in AMIS festivals also offered ASM students an incredible cultural exchange experience. Surrounded by young musicians from diverse backgrounds, they developed a broader understanding of global perspectives and musical traditions. Traveling to Germany and the UK allowed our students to experience new cultures, connect with peers from around the world, and build friendships that transcend borders.
Whether it was enjoying German cuisine, exploring Düsseldorf’s landmarks, or soaking in London’s vibrant musical scene, these experiences deepened their understanding of the world and helped them see how music can connect people across cultures. The festivals also fostered a sense of camaraderie among ASM students, who supported each other throughout the journey and celebrated each other’s accomplishments.
Reflecting on a Memorable Journey
The experiences of ASM’s jazz and choir students at the AMIS festivals have left a lasting impact on each participant. From intense rehearsals to exhilarating performances and memorable cultural exchanges, these festivals provided ASM students with a deeper appreciation of music’s role in education and community building.
Both the Jazz Festival and Treble Choir Festival underscored the power of music to inspire, challenge, and unite people. The students returned to ASM with enhanced musical skills, unforgettable memories, and a renewed sense of enthusiasm for the arts. These festivals have set the stage for future musical endeavors, encouraging ASM’s young artists to continue exploring their talents and striving for excellence.

ASM’s involvement in AMIS events reflects our commitment to providing a well-rounded education that includes diverse opportunities in the arts. We believe that music education plays a vital role in personal and academic growth, fostering creativity, discipline, and cultural awareness. Through initiatives like these festivals, ASM is proud to support students in developing their skills, exploring their passions, and representing our school on an international stage.
