College/University Guidance

The goal of ASM’s college counseling office is to help our students identify the appropriate "fit" for all post-secondary options. College “Fit” is defined as finding an institution that meets the academic, emotional, geographical and financial needs of the student.  This improves a student’s likelihood of graduation from  a chosen college, as well as ultimate success in their chosen field of work.

The college counselor will guide the students towards autonomy and emphasize the following important aspects of the college admission process:

  • Attention to detail and organization (Helping students gain control of applications and deadlines)
  • Self-Knowledge (Helping students to discover and articulate their strengths)
  • Education (Helping students to research all academic programs)

The ASM College Counselor offers direction on the college search, utilizing internet resources, college essay writing, SAT testing, managing application timelines, and other relevant topics.

Additionally throughout the year, Admissions Representatives from universities around the world travel to ASM to meet students. The purpose of their visits is to speak with students about particular colleges and to answer questions about the application process. At this time, students may sign up to receive college admissions mailings, and admissions interviews may also be arranged.

The College Counselors present informational evenings periodically throughout the year at ASM, at which students of any grade level and their families are welcome to attend. Beginning in the spring of the junior year or by request, the College Counselors offer customized university consultation for students and their families; the individualized counseling relationship continues through to the end of the application process. Working together, students, parents and Counselors generate recommendations for prospective universities. The College Counselor also advises the student about a strategy for the process, including required test-taking, college visits, essay writing and presenting oneself, and an overall timeline for the process.

Now is the time for High School Students to Plan Invaluable Summer Activities

Dear Parents and Students,

Summer programs (click here for the complete summer program list) are a fantastic way for high school students to test drive college life, discover great new schools and find the colleges that best fit their individual needs.

Attending the right pre-college program can help set the foundation for a successful college search and college education.   It is important for students to start thinking about how to spend their summers and to start making plans now. Competition to get into college is pretty fierce these days and as part of the IB Diploma program, students need to complete CAS hours and prepare for the vigorous curriculum.  Summer programs can help add to a student's list of extracurricular activities on their college applications and provide them with the opportunity to complete some their IB CAS requirements the summer before entering their senior year.

College admission officers love applicants who challenge themselves and push their boundaries, both inside and outside the classroom. As students spend the school year balancing a rigorous course schedule on top of extracurricular activities, athletics, test preparation, and (almost forgot) a social life, summer pre-college academic programs offer invaluable opportunities to take advanced courses and make use of resources not available in most high schools. And with most application deadlines set several months before programs begin, it’s never too early to start planning summer activities.

Please  note  that  ASM  does  not  specifically  endorse  or  recommend  any  of  the programs listed.  We  provide  these  as  a  referral  service  only  and  are  not responsible  for validating  the quality or standard of the programs  offered. We would, however, be appreciative of any feedback you could provide to us should you elect to enroll your child in one of these options.

Please send your comments (positive or negative) to:

Best,
