Mission

The American School of Milan ensures a modern and rigorous education for International students to excel in the changing world of tomorrow.

The School

ASM is an independent, co-educational college preparatory day school with a state-of-the-art campus located south of Milan. Founded in 1962, ASM has been educating international students from more than 50 countries for more than 50 years. ASM provides schooling for students from 3 years of age through high school with its American/international program of studies. The school is an IB World School that offers the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBDP). In addition, students are awarded the American School High School Diploma. ASM is accredited by the Middles States Commission on Higher Education.

Curriculum

All students are enrolled in a college preparatory program. All junior and senior level courses are taught at the IB level. ASM is a technology focused school with a laptop program from grades 6-12.

ASM Diploma Requirements

Twenty-two (22) credits in high school course work are required as a minimum for graduation. A minimum of eight semesters of attendance in high school is also required. Each credit represents one year of work.

English 4

Student Body

ASM enrolls approximately 800 students representing 50 nationalities. Of the total, 15% of ASM students hold an American passport, 38% are host-country nationals, and 47% are third-country nationals. The senior class is comprised of 45 students. Many students included in the numbers hold multiple passports. In general, Italian students are enrolled for their entire school career and children of other nationalities study at ASM for shorter periods.

Faculty

In the 2015-2016 school year, there are 83 full-time faculty members, including 57 U.S. citizens, 11 host-country nationals, and 15 third-country nationals. Seventy-five percent of faculty hold an advanced degree (59 Master’s degree, 3 Doctoral degree).

GPA

Owing to the transitory nature of the student body and the divergent schools from which they enroll, ASM does not report a cumulative GPA or class rank.

Co-Curricular Activities

Students can choose from a varied program of sports, cultural events, personal enrichment and service. The activities are often reflective and immersed in the inspiring area surrounding Milan. Among these choices are: a thriving Model United Nations, Motion Picture Arts Studio, After School Achievement Program (ASAP), Senior Wind Orchestra and Rock/Jazz Band, varsity sports, Yearbook, National Honor Society, two school theatre groups, and Rock Climbing and Bouldering.

International Baccalaureate

ASM strongly believes in offering a balanced demanding curriculum which is highlighted in our international baccalaureate program. The IB Diploma program emphasizes rigorous college preparatory classes, where external testing is required in 6 core subject areas. These areas include native language, second language, experimental sciences, the arts, mathematics and computer science, individuals and society.
